By the way, what is the Hajj?

The Hajj, often referred to as ‘the great pilgrimage’, is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam. It is a religious obligation for any Muslim who is physically and financially able, and must be performed at least once in a lifetime.

Unlike the ‘Umrah (the “small pilgrimage”), which can be performed at any time of the year, the Hajj can only be performed at a very specific time: during the month of Dhul-Hijja, the twelfth month of the Muslim calendar.

  • The Tawaf (circumambulation around the Kaaba)
  • The Sa’i (round trip between the Safa and Marwa mountains)

These spiritual stages aim to purify the soul, renew faith and strengthen the bond with Allah ﷻ.

But the Hajj is much more than just a physical journey. It is a profound spiritual quest, a call to forgiveness, piety and humility, shared with a huge community united by a common faith.

To perform the Hajj is to respond to God’s invitation and to undergo a transforming experience, marked by a deep connection with the Creator and an unparalleled spiritual renewal.

What are the merits of making the pilgrimage to Mecca?

🕋 1. The reward of Paradise

According to Jabir رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said:

‘Hajj mabrour has no reward other than Paradise.’
(Reported by Ahmad and authenticated by Sheikh Albani in Sahih Targhib n°1104)

Someone asked what ‘mabrour’ meant? The Prophet ﷺ replied:

‘Offer food and kind words.

Hassan al-Basri رَحِمَهُ الله clarified:

‘The accepted Hajj consists in the pilgrim’s returning with a renunciation of this world and an aspiration for the Hereafter.

💰 2. Preservation from poverty and sin

According to Abdallah Ibn Mass’oud رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ said :

‘Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah frequently, for they remove poverty and sins as the bellows remove impurities from iron, gold and silver.’
(Reported by Tirmidhi – Sunan n°810 and authenticated by Sheikh Albani)

The Hajj is therefore a source of material and spiritual purification, bringing us closer to Allah and freeing us from the burdens of this world.

🤍 3. Purification of the soul

According to Abu Hourayra رضي الله عنه, the prophet ﷺ said :

‘Whoever performs Hajj without sexual intercourse or sin, will return like the day his mother gave birth to him [without sin].’
(Rapporté par Boukhari – 1521 et Muslim – 1350)

The Hajj thus offers a spiritual rebirth, washing the believer from his past sins and allowing him to leave with a purified soul.

🛡️ 4. One of the most meritorious acts

About the Hajj, Omar Ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه said:

“Pack your bags for the purpose of performing the Hajj, it is one of two jihads in the path of Allah.”

more, Aïsha رضي الله عنها had asked the Prophet ﷺ :

<<Oh Messenger of Allah! Jihad is the most meritorious work in our eyes. Can we take part?>>

prophetsaid:

« “You (women) have the best jihad, that is, the Hajj without sin.”»
(Reported by Al-Boukhari – N°1520)

🌟 In Summary: the benefits of Hajj

  • Access to Paradise for an accepted Hajj (mabrour).
  • Elimination of sins and poverty.
  • Complete purification of the soul and past faults.
  • One of the noblest and most meritorious acts in the sight of Allah.

The Hajj is much more than a physical journey, it is an incomparable spiritual experience, an inner renewal and a proof of absolute devotion to Allah ﷻ.
