13. Specialized halal travel companies

There are also halal travel agencies that offer an instructive framework to the trip with the acquisition of religious science alongside the fun side of the trip. Combining the two during a Muslim trip would thus be possible. Other agencies are also developing the idea of linking the small Umrah pilgrimage with a visit to another Muslim country. These new concepts seduce more and more Muslim customers who, thirsty for knowledge and visits of new places, do not lose a moment in front of these new modes of halal and ethical travel. Some agencies offer a honeymoon in accordance with Islam, a kind of halal honeymoon. It is now possible to enjoy a cheap halal vacation as several players in the tourism market now offer this type of vacation for Muslims.

  • However, halal tourism or « travel for Muslims » is not only a leisure tourism, it is also cultural. In recent years, we have noticed the emergence of « halal travel sites » that offer tours « in accordance with Islam », that is to say, to go to countries marked by an Islamic tradition and a strong history, to meet the local population, and to give rise to a feeling of belonging to a community that transcends borders, a kind of ethical Muslim travel. The tours are organized in cities bearing the trace of an Islamic belonging, but also in China, Greece or Spain where the Muslim presence lasted 800 years (Andalusia).
The visits are organized according to the rhythm of the religious events, such as the five daily prayers, the Friday prayer or the Ramadan. In Istanbul, the visits of the most famous places of worship are organized at the time of the prayers to make tourism… while practicing its religion.
  • There are more than one billion Muslims in the world, so the growth of this new market is particularly promising and a major financial challenge for the tourism industry. This is why it is always necessary to innovate, to produce new destinations, new concepts, new dreams for the Muslim of today. In fact, Muslim travel already represents more than 10% of the world’s tourism and it is growing every year by 4.8% (Crescentrating website).

Traveling allows us to realize that we are not sufficiently grateful for what Allah has given us, for our minor problems in the face of the poverty, wars and misery that the world carries. The Muslim journey teaches us to relativize and refocus on the essential. Let’s say stop to the superficial and this consumer society which solicits us permanently. The simplest things in life are the best. This is why the future belongs to ethical travel.

Halal travel is within everyone’s reach, for all budgets, for all means (plane, boat, on foot, by bike, etc.). The destinations are plural, the landscapes multiple and the beauties to discover pure, sincere and natural.

Muslim youth and halal travel

Young Muslim travelers are opting most for destinations such as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Turkey, according to a study, in the coming years, spending on halal travel by young Muslims is expected to explode to an average of $300 billion (2026 estimate).

Indeed, halal travel is growing with halal restaurants without alcohol, halal hotels seeking to provide facilities and services in line with Muslim principles with continuous innovation in this market.  Airlines such as Saudia Airlines, Mahan Air, Royal Brunei Airlines, Iran Air and Rayani Air offer halal meals on board and do not serve alcohol. Prayer rooms are becoming more common in airports, especially in Europe, and even on some airlines. Women-only pools and beaches, family activities, halal spas (not mixed) ….

The older generation travels once a year, and in a family setting, while young Muslims between the ages of 18 and 40 make several halal trips per year, with family or friends.

Halal travel among this younger generation of Muslims is booming. This population is looking for new exotic destinations, new experiences and destinations and localities further away than those visited by their parents or previous generation.

Also two phenomena are observed, on the one hand, the expenditure per trip is lower than the previous generation (because the household is smaller) but as young Muslims travel more frequently, the overall expenditure is higher.  On the other hand, in the coming years, many Muslims will enter a consumption phase where they will earn more and therefore spend more and consequently travel more. And therefore travel halal in a more important way. This is why Muslims are a prime target for the global tourism market. Most countries are trying to develop this share of the tourism market by focusing on halal travel for Muslims.  Economic growth is mobilizing all tourism players who are constantly innovating to appeal to the increasingly demanding Muslim travelers.

Combining individual halal travel with humanitarian travel

I told you above that Ramadan, after being a spiritual month, is a month of sharing. A lot of marauding, sharing of meals are realized. I propose you to give of your person, of your time by helping the most deprived, the old, the sick, the isolated, the disabled people etc. This is what ethical travel is all about, taking advantage of one’s free time to be useful to others. The Muslim traveler is sensitive to this theme and these values.

Take advantage of this opportunity to do good deeds, do good. Psychologically speaking, you will have the change of scenery linked to the trip on the one hand and on the other hand, the reward of the good deed which will be double. A divine reward and a personal reward. Helping your fellow man is rewarding and motivating.

Let’s visit a jewel of the Middle East: Oman

The ranking is staggering for this small Arabian country of 2.5 million citizens, wedged between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen to the west. In 2017, the newspaper Le Monde ranked the Sultanate of Oman as a top destination to discover in an article by Thomas Doustaly. The three main criteria for selecting a destination are culture, price and climate.

The previous year, the English version of Vogue magazine had already recommended visiting the country in an article written by Celest Moure. As TripAdvisor’s 2016 barometer shows, Oman has all the right stuff. It is even an ideal winter destination, with some 25 degrees until April-May (the temperature then rises to 50 degrees in the most desert areas). The main argument in favor of the country is the peace, security and happiness of the Omanis and the 1.5 million expatriates who live there.

A country on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman consists of desert, numerous oases and long coastlines on the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman.

The Wahiba Sands are a dune region inhabited by Bedouins. The port capital Muscat has the massive and contemporary Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the old city of Matrah, with its labyrinthine souk and bustling fish market.

A true land of a thousand and one nights, this country is a must see. Muslim friendly country you will not be disappointed.
