Menstruation During Umrah – A Guide for Female Pilgrims

Umrah is a profoundly spiritual experience for every Muslim. However, for women, certain questions arise when they are on their menstrual period during this sacred journey. This practical guide addresses the rules and advice for female pilgrims who are menstruating.

Entering the State of Ihram in Medina

Firstly, it is permissible for a menstruating woman to enter the state of Ihram and perform the acts that other pilgrims do. However, she cannot perform the circumambulation (Tawaf) around the Kaaba or enter the sacred mosque until her period ends.

As reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: « I arrived in Mecca while menstruating and could not perform the circumambulation nor the walk between Safa and Marwa. » The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: « Do what the other pilgrims do, but do not perform the circumambulation until your period has ended. »

During Umrah in Mecca

If a woman starts her period after performing the circumambulation (Tawaf), she can proceed with the walk (Sa’i) between Safa and Marwa, as this walk takes place outside the sacred mosque and does not require a state of purity. If her period begins before the circumambulation (Tawaf), she must wait until she regains ritual purity before starting the circumambulation (Tawaf).

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen explained that the woman must enter the state of Ihram even if she is menstruating. As in the case of Asma bint Umays, who gave birth before starting her pilgrimage, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised her to take a ritual bath and enter the state of Ihram.

Conclusion

Umrah is a sacred spiritual journey, and every woman can complete it by following the appropriate guidance during her menstrual period. In case of doubt, it is always advisable to consult a guide or an Islamic scholar for specific advice. For female pilgrims, the key is to stay informed and prepared to perform their rites in peace and in accordance with Islamic teachings.
